About

I started my career as a high school teacher because I loved figuring out how people learn and designing experiences that actually worked for them. As a classroom teacher, I most enjoyed working with students that others labeled "uninterested" or "difficult" and figuring out how I could engage them.  I like solving challenging problems and believe that a small perspective shift can change the way that someone sees something and how they learn. 

These days I work at Carnegie Mellon University advising graduate students at the School of Computer Science through complex, high stakes immigration processes, which has meant building training materials, documentation, and institutional resources from scratch. Alongside that I've taken graduate coursework in CMU's Human-Computer Interaction Institute, diving deeper into learning science, instructional design, and UX research while working full time.  

I'm now looking to bring all of that together in a role where I can do meaningful work at scale. Curriculum design, learner-centered instruction, and assessment development are things I've been doing for years.  Recently, I’ve added tech and design skills and tools to help with my goal of making a better educational experience for as many people as possible. I’m looking for a role at that crossroads: learning design, UX research, or product-adjacent work in EdTech or mission-driven spaces where outcomes for real people are the goal.

In 2026, with AI everywhere and technology ubiquitous in our everyday lives, I give a lot of thought to the impact that these technologies have on all of us.  They are extremely powerful tools that have the power to transform how we think and learn, and a transformation will happen whether we are aware of it or not - so let's be aware of it.  We need people with pedagogical and design backgrounds to guide the way and make technology more meaningful, helpful and interactive rather than just giving us all the answers.  As exciting and useful as I think technology can be, as a real-life educator I can recognize that not every problem calls for ‘more technology’ as a solution.  I daydream about ways that educators can use technology in new exciting ways to be more effective at what they do, rather than the technology being the teacher. My educator's perspective guides my approach to user experience and interaction design.

In my free time, I am pretty passionate about music, both making it and discovering it.  In a past life, I was a professional musician and stand-up comedian.  I like spending time in nature and learning about languages and culture. Hablo espanol y 日本語を練習しています.

CPT/OPT Work Authorization Training

International PhD students kept getting stuck in the work authorization process with repetitive frustrations — not because information they needed was missing, but because they’d been diagnosing their own eligibility from peer advice and chatbots instead of official guidance. I redesigned CMU’s required Canvas training for CPT/OPT work authorization to meet students where they actually were, not where the process assumed they’d be.

Built on a learner persona and journey map grounded in real advising conversations, the redesign front-loads a self-check eligibility tool before any content, tackles the highest-friction requirement (the PhD employer letter) head-on with a ready-to-send email template, and is structured for scanning under deadline pressure rather than careful reading in advance. 

Now live as required training for incoming international students at CMU; results being tracked via quiz data for iteration.

Redesigning the CMU Flex Plan Portal

Faculty across CMU were quietly dreading a tool they were required to use. The Flex Plan portal — where instructors manage student disability accommodations — buried people in dense, unstructured text with no clear starting point, and made them re-enter the same information every semester. As part of a three-person team, I treated this as an information design problem first. We focused on re-thinking the information architecture of this portal.

We grounded the redesign in two rounds of faculty interviews — first to surface real pain points, later to pressure-test working prototypes — and built up through Garrett’s UX layers across four iterations, from raw content mapping to a polished dashboard. The final design reorganizes the portal around actions instead of information dumps: progressive disclosure hides complexity until it’s needed, color-coded status indicators show faculty exactly where they are in a process, and repetitive re-entry is streamlined out of the flow entirely.

Delivered as a design proposal and prototype to the client (Office of Disability Resources), grounded in direct faculty feedback at every stage.

Students watching a five-minute intro-to-coding video could ace multiple choice questions on variables and conditionals — then freeze when asked to actually apply them. Half of learners got both post-test application questions wrong, and a majority left open-ended questions blank entirely: they didn’t just make mistakes, they didn’t feel confident enough to try.

Working with a three-person team, I helped diagnose the gap and redesign the module using backward design and Bloom’s Taxonomy — swapping the passive video for an interactive student-entered experience of the same length, built around four hands-on “learn by doing” checkpoints with immediate feedback, plus a synthesis exercise before the final quiz. We tested it against the original in a randomized A/B study with 30 real students.

The redesign didn’t just improve scores — it changed how students engaged with their own learning. Error rates dropped from 50% to 13%, motivation rose across the board, and zero students left a question blank, compared to a meaningful share in the original. The takeaway: adding more practice and feedback opportunities drastically improved how much students learned and how they felt about the module.

Lost in the Archives: An Information Architecture Study of NTS Radio

NTS Radio archives every show it’s ever aired — a decade-plus of human-curated, algorithm-free radio that should be a goldmine. Instead, long-time listeners described browsing the thousands of hours of content as “daunting,” and I wanted to know why a site built on discovery could feel so hard to actually find anything in. So I went and studied it myself.

Through interviews, task-based observations, and a reasoned-through card sort with NTS subscribers, one core tension emerged: discovery and search are two different jobs, and the site only does one well. The homepage and Explore page are genuinely great for casual “surprise me” browsing — but the moment a user has something specific in mind (an old favorite, a half-remembered host), the flat, chronological-only saved library offers no way in. Meanwhile, the site’s best asset — its specific, human-assigned genre tags — is confined to one corner of the experience instead of extending where users actually need it.

My recommendations stayed intentionally targeted rather than a full overhaul: bring filtering and genre tags into the personal library, add a calendar-based way to browse saved episodes by time, consolidate redundant navigation, and — because NTS’s whole ethos is anti-algorithm — a “Roll the Dice” feature that surfaces random archive episodes instead of recommending them.

Independent UX research project; recommendations proposed with a validation plan (tree testing) for future iteration.
